Draft for legal review. This text was prepared to fit how Chapters works, but it hasn't been checked by a South African attorney yet. Remove this notice once it has.

Chapters is a planning coach. It helps you work out what to do and when, but it doesn't replace professionals.

Legal steps

Our notes on marriage law (civil marriages, customary marriages, civil unions, antenuptial contracts, Home Affairs registration) are general information, current as far as we know at the time of writing. The law and Home Affairs processes change, and they apply differently to each couple. Before you rely on any of it, confirm it with your marriage officer, Home Affairs or an attorney. An antenuptial contract must be drawn up by a notary and signed before the wedding.

Culture and faith

Lobola, umembeso, religious requirements and family customs differ between families and communities. Our suggestions are only prompts to help you plan. Your families and faith leaders are the authority.

Money

Budget splits and price ranges are typical figures to help you plan. They aren't quotes or financial advice. Always get written quotes and read supplier contracts before you pay a deposit.

Suppliers

We don't recommend, endorse or take commission from any supplier, and we aren't responsible for what suppliers do.

No invented results

We don't publish made-up testimonials or statistics. When we share couples' stories, they'll be real and shared with permission.
